Port Captain Responsibilities
- Perform annual Performance Evaluations of Captains, Trip Captains, Tankerman, Deckhands and Dispatchers
- Assist in evaluating prospective employees
- Advise Operations Manager on safe draft needs
- Assist in monitoring, coordinating and structuring EMIS Pilot Trainee's (Steersman) Program and Tankerman training program
- Constantly monitor vessel traffic orders and communicate concerns and\/or ideas for increased efficiencies to other affected departments and personnel
- Monitor pilothouse personnel to ensure that only posted pilots are used in a vessel's area of navigation
- Offer expertise and experience when needed in litigation, daily operations and any other time such expertise and experience is needed
- Monitor river conditions and advise the Operations Manager of concerns
- Remain updated with Marine Broadcasts and Bulletins and ensure that this information is passed to proper personnel\/areas
- Make periodic visits to EMIS vessels to perform audits, inspections, training, conduct meetings, drills and occasionally ride vessels to fill when needed
- Provide input and participate in the determination of long term goals
- Work with personnel both shoreside and vessel to prevent and\/or solve navigation and cargo transfer problems
- Maintain a current USCG Masters License, TWIC and Radar Endorsement
- Report any unsafe or hazardous conditions and non-conformities to supervisor
Port Captain Qualifications
- At least five years' experience in a tow boat pilot house position
- At least 2 years successful leadership (Captain experience accepted case by case)
- Must hold a USCG license as Master of Operator or Uninspected Towing Vessel
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbal
- Basic computer skills required (Outlook and Excel)
- Must be able to handle required responsibilities and posses the ability to plan, coordinate, and organize projects
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal regulations governing the marine industry
