JOB DESCRIPTION
PART-TIME BOAT CAPTAIN
POSITION TITLE: Boat Captain
SUPERVISOR- Dual Reporting to:
· Park Operations Ranger for boat’s physical operation, maintenance and safety.
· Education Manager for scheduling and tour operations.
SUMMARY: Serves as a Petersburg Boat Captain for historic tours, music tours, and special events on the Augusta Canal. This position has a flexible schedule.
The captain is responsible for the safe, efficient operation of the boats, the safety and conduct of the crew and passengers. The captain is expected to be cooperative and pleasant with employees and passengers. The captain gives guidance and direction to crew members and ensures that they comply with all regulations and perform their duties efficiently and safely. The captain reports to the Park Ranger/Manager on all matters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the boats and the performance and well-being of the crew. The captain also keeps the Park Ranger/Manager informed at all times of incidents, accidents, and other concerns pertaining to the boats, the crew, and the passengers. Captains and crew members are subject to any corrective action deemed necessary to protect the boats and/or interest of the Augusta Canal Authority.
Requirements:
· Must have and maintain a current U.S. Coast Guard Masters Captains License or have a current OUPV (six pack) with a willingness to get a Masters.
· Have and maintain current CPR and First Aid certificates.
· Enrollment in Drug Consortium selected by the Augusta Canal Authority.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily Duties
· Captain the Petersburg Boat as scheduled.
· Manage the safe loading and unloading of all passengers at dock.
· Provide daily communications with the reservation staff.
· Inspect the boat before shifts. Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work environment, which includes boat, dock and walkway from the Discovery Center to boat
· Perform other daily duties/tasks as assigned by ACA management
· Advise the Park Ranger of any problems affecting the boats
· Always leave a clean, well maintained boat ready to get underway
Maintenance
· Assists with maintenance of boats and equipment on board, such as engines, fire extinguishers, or life preservers.
· Assist with maintaining docks and all equipment on docks when requested.
· Assist in making repairs to the boats and other tasks, when requested.
Technical Knowledge
An Augusta Canal Authority captain should be able to:
· Spot and report problems.
· Troubleshoot and help. Learn to diagnose symptoms of mechanical problems.
Seamanship
· Rules of the road must always be observed.
· Appropriate navigation procedures must be practiced at all times.
· Boat Handling: An ACA Captain should be able to dock and hold the boat at a rig in a professional manner.
· Boat Safety: An ACA Captain should always be concerned for the safety of the boat, passengers, and crew. In addition, ACA Captains should be aware of any unsafe condition or practice that may endanger the vessel. An ACA Captain should be aware of anything that may be harmful to passengers, and crew.
· All federal environmental rules that may apply to the vessel must be taken into consideration. Also be aware of state and local rules that may apply to the vessel.
